So you love cats and you’ve possibly collected yourself a few specimens, but you’d rather not have them completely dominate your household just yet? Just kidding, we all know feline dominance is inevitable, but one thing they don’t get a say in is the way I decorate my house. No huge, ugly scratching posts or tacky litter box invasions here. Instead, I go out of my way looking for good-looking, sturdy pet products that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Soon I’ll be writing a post about design scratching posts, as well as a DIY project I’m working on, but for now, let’s have a closer look at some of my favourite design litter boxes.
Modkat Review
My first fancy litter box was the innovative Modkat by Modko, which had me swear off my boring Ferplast litter boxes for good.
- Not only gorgeous and easy to clean, this award-winning litter-box is sturdy, practical, and eliminates litter tracking almost completely.
- Superior quality plastic and ingenious build.
- Makes cleaning out litter boxes super easy and quick.
- The scoop is conveniently stored on the box itself, but it would be handier if the holes were a bit smaller.
- Edit 2018: Unfortunately not ideal for plus size kitties. My ginormous 7 kilo male Tonk sometimes makes the lid flip in on itself, but I don’t really mind. Nothing has broken yet, and I’ve now owned 2 of these litter boxes for over 4 years.
- I could do without the reusable litter liner, but it’s a sturdier and environmentally friendly alternative for people who tend to use plastic liners anyway. The website says the liners can last up to 3 months, but I disagree, they last much longer than that.
The $180 price tag is quite steepand colour options are limited. Edit 2018: The price has dropped to $79, leaving no more excuses to get this gorgeous, practical and sturdy litter box that will weather the paws of time.
The newest XL top and Front Entry litter box by Modkat is extra large and strong and suitable for the heaviest of cats. My next buy will definitely be this one.
Poopoopeedo Review
A litter box that will enhance any interior is the stunning Poopoopeedo by SinDesign.
Some perks (next to its drop dead gorgeous looks):
- The scoop can be discreetly stored on the inside of the lid and is a pleasure to use.
- A replaceable anti-odor tablet is integrated in the lid.
- The varied and gorgeous colour options make it tough to pick just one. I went for neutral black, but would opt for a white-paw-proof colour next time.
- Handy and cute cat-paw shaped handle.
- It’s pretty huge, so it’s perfect for big-ass cats or kitties in need of extra space or privacy.
Cons:
- At €99,90 it isn’t cheap, especially compared to the more qualitative Modkat which now costs less.
- A little flimsy. The plastic used isn’t the best quality for the price.
- Less practical to clean out than the Modkat litter box.

Not tested but drooling over these anyway:
- This quirky but extremely pricey “Premium natural wood” Tv litter tray.
- Modkat Dupe for US Customers
Due to the extremely high shipping costs to Europe I haven’t tried the Iris Top Entry Litter box out yet, but its sleek looks, high Amazon rating and sharp price at $31 make it worth a mention.
