Do you thrive near the ocean? Are you in love with the beach? Wish you could captivate and hold that summery holiday vibe all year round? Why not consider giving your house (or room) a stylish beachy makeover?
Regardless of whether your home has a modern, colonial or cottage style look, it’s easy to be creative when beachifying your home. Just take a stroll on the beach or look up some pictures online and let the sea inspire you to recreate your idea of paradise.
- First of all, make sure the space you’re decorating is bright and airy. A large, open room with lots of natural light is ideal. Go for a relaxing zen vibe.
- Use lots of light colours inspired by the sea: pastels work wonders, as well as sandy colours, blues and greens. White is your friend.
- Try to make use of as many natural materials as you can: weathered (or white-washed) wood, rotan, wicker, bamboo etc. Think antique furniture, comfortable white sofas with lots of cushions, rotan chairs, woven rugs or hang out a hammock on your porch.
- Re-upholster your couch or pillows with ocean appropriate colours, I’m thinking whites (!), aquamarine or light blue striped materials.
- Introduce accessories reminiscent of the beach. Put an old surfboard in the corner, add some lanterns, anchors, a mini yacht, ocean inspired art, pebbles or shells you picked up on your last romantic walk on the beach etc.
- Be creative with what you find. Put some sand, shells or pebbles in a large vase as a base for a candle, bind fisherman’s rope around old furniture or the pillars supporting your veranda, or hang a fishing net on your wall from which you can hang your family photographs.
- Add an element of water such as an aquarium or a fountain, and make sure you add tropical plants such as palm trees, yucca or bamboo plants.
